Fall Prevention ...
Falls can be very frightening to individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their care partners. They generally are dramatic and symbolize a loss of control. One of our major goals as an organization is to educate individuals living with Parkinson’s disease on fall prevention and identify ways to prevent falls.
Our Balance and Strength exercise classes can help you take back some control. Any one of our exercise classes - Tai Chi, Yoga, Rhythm & Grace, high-intensity exercise - gives you the tools to achieve strength emotionally and physically. If you are experiencing more and more falls, see your doctor for further evaluation.
The doctor can help determine if something else other than the Parkinson’s is causing you to fall. For example, an infection might be exacerbating your symptoms. Communicate with your doctor to get to the root cause of the problem. Take more control of your course of treatment. Include your care partner in learning about ways to help prevent falls. Check out safety tips under the Resources section of our website.
Take care of the obvious such as making sure clutter is removed from the floor, remove area rugs that you could trip over, place grab bars in the shower, clear the path to the bathroom, and provide good lighting throughout your home. After taking action follow up with a home safety evaluation. Remember, you can take control over some aspects of your Parkinson's. Following these basic safety tips is the first step.
