People with PD can get better... and stay better longer with exercise!
That is the MOTTO of the Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!) Project – a project sponsored by NeuroFit NetWorks (www.nfnw.org). The PWR! Project was started in October 2009 when Dr. Becky Farley, a researcher, LSVT® BIG inventor, physical therapist, neuroscientist, and Parkinson’s exercise specialist opened a model community-based neurofitness center for people with PD in Tucson, AZ (www.pwrgym.org). PWR! GYM Tucson offers early and continuous access to research-based exercise programs that target the motor/cognitive/emotional symptoms of Parkinson disease. Research suggests that early intervention and continuous access to exercise and enrichment will be essential to achieving disease modification. PWR! is about developing community neurofitness centers as integral healthcare components to achieving this goal.
In 2010, Becky went on to found the nonprofit organization, NeuroFit NetWorks (www.nfnw.org), to enhance the growth of PD-exercise experts and other neurofitness centers across the nation. Dr. Farley is now training clinicians and fitness professionals in how to use a neuroplasticity-principled model she recently created called Exercise4BrainChange™ - for developing PD-specific exercise programs. The Exercise4BrainChange™ model allows for a system of communication with a similar language across a variety of therapeutic disciplines and exercise professionals. It assures the essential principles of “how to practice” for optimal brain function and skill acquisition are implemented across rehabilitation and community settings for individuals with PD. It allows for a system of communication across a variety of therapeutic disciplines and exercise professionals. In addition, all training programs share her translation of the latest research regarding Parkinson and Exercise with specific application to FUNction. The translation of these principles to rehabilitation and community exercise programs, offers promise to delay disease onset, slow disease progression, restore motor function, and increase longevity and quality of life for people with neurodegenerative or neurological conditions.
And we are so excited to announce that in JULY, PWR! is coming to COLORADO!
Becky will be in Colorado in July offering training workshops for therapists and fitness professionals – the PARKINSON EXERCISE REVOLUTION is coming! People with Parkinson Disease in the Colorado area will have an opportunity to hear Dr. Farley’s theories for themselves and eventually to try them out too! On July 20, 2011 from 2 – 3:30 pm Dr. Farley will be doing a Community Lecture for individuals with PD at Colorado Community Church, 3651 S. Colorado Blvd, Englewood (located 1 block south of Hampden Avenue on Colorado Blvd.) This community lecture will be followed by two PWR! Training workshops, one for Group Instructors and Exercise Professionals at the PWR! MOVES & Circuit Combo Workshop July 21 -22nd, and one for therapists at the PWR! Clinician Workshop July 23 -24th. Once these trainings are completed, you will be able to find a list of these PWR! - exercise experts at the PWR! Project website – www.nfnw.org.
A Parkinson patient for ten years, I was privileged recently to be able to visit Dr. Farley's extensive state-of-the-art program for a few days in Tucson. What a golden opportunity that she is coming to Denver in July! Don't miss it!
FANTASTIC! Looking forward to
Dr. Farley's lecture.
When I was diagnosed with PD 15 years ago,I created for myself a list of activities that I felt would help me keep the progression of PD at bay. Exercise was at the top of the list then. It still is today. Keeping the progression of PD at bay.
