My husband and I both attend the yoga classes for people with Parkinson's through PAR. I also attend the Rhythm and Grace dance for Parkinson's class. I cannot say enough about what these classes have done for me.
I have lots of challenges with dystonia. Doing yoga doesn't prevent my dystonia, but keeping limber through yoga makes it not hurt so much when my limbs tighten up badly. The strengthening work of yoga has prevented a lot of falls for me, too.
And dance? Pure, simple, joy! I have learned I can grapevine, even when I can't walk forward well (looks cool while walking in downtown Denver, too, at least when my daughter does it with me) I can move so much easier when I dance than at any other time. Our dance teachers treat us as peers - not as patients! See a video about the original program in New York: Mark Morris dance group
I just started taking the high intensity exercise class through PAR and I love it! From the first class I felt like it was where I needed to be. I gained a lot of weight following my DBS surgery. Never having been grossly overweight before, I was at a loss as to how to get back to my old size. The amount of weight I need to lose just overwhelmed me! It feels really good to know I'm finally taking steps to control my weight and improve my overall health.
