Diet and Nutrition

Eating right for your symptoms is important

There is no single answer. PD affects each individual quite differently; some factors that can change your dietary needs include age, gender, whether you have any other diagnosed conditions such as elevated blood pressure, food allergies, diabetes, etc. Also, medications may have a wide range of side effects that can impact nutritional health. That includes medications for heart disease, blood pressure, and other conditions, as well as PD medications. It also includes many over-the-counter medications.

Always check with your doctor to find out what kinds of food are appropriate for you and your symptoms. Your doctor may have a specific diet for your treatment. Remember, only your doctor can recommend the right diet for you. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Get enough calcium. It helps keep bones strong. Milk and cheese are good calcium sources.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Their fiber can help prevent constipation.
  • Cut your food into small pieces to aid in chewing and swallowing.
  • Chew slowly and swallow carefully to avoid choking.
  • Drink plenty of water between bites.
  • Talk to your doctor about special cups and utensils that may make eating easier for you.
  • Ask your doctor if you should avoid any foods that could interfere with other medications you may be taking. Your doctor can recommend other appropriate protein sources if needed.
  • Eating organic foods reduces exposure to dangerous pesticides.
