Disability Insurance

Understand how it works

Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are "insured," meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes. But, if you have purchased private disability insurance or have benefits under a group insurance plan provided by your employer, you may be entitled to benefits. Some key things to know about long term disability insurance:

  • Requires you to prove evidence of good health to qualify for a policy
  • Pays whenever you cannot work as the result of an illness or injury
